On Thursday 23rd November 2017 the MMLA organised a seminar entitled ‘New Frontiers in the Maritime Environmental Law Sector’. After a short welcome address from Dr Ann Fenech, Dr Stephan Piazza, Manager – Tax – Shipping & Yachting, KPMG, spoke about Ship Recycling and the Challenges in a European Scenario; Dr Matthew Attard, from the Shipping Department of Ganado Advocates, explained the history of the Nairobi International Convention on the Removal of Wrecks, its aims and practical application; Dr Dulcie Zammit, Registrar of Ships, Merchant Shipping Directorate, Transport Malta addressed the issue of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Ships and the Developments in the International Legal Framework. Over 100 delegates filled the hall at the Malta Chamber of Commerce in Valletta.

On 15 March 2017 the MMLA organised a seminar on ‘Developing Trends in Ship Finance’. Dr Ann Fenech gave an introduction to the topic and explained the work of the CMI IWG on Ship Finance Security Practices, which she is the Chairman of. Dr Ivan Vella spoke about Traditional Ship Finance, while Dr Nicholas Valenzia looked into New Sources of Ship Finance. Dr Caroline Risiott and Dr Jan Rossi addressed Legislative Developments reflecting Trends in Ship Finance and Dr Adrian Attard described Current Enforcement and New Challenges.

On 11 April 2016 MMLA together with MISA invited to A REVIEW OF VOLUME II OF THE IMLI MANUAL ON INTERNATIONAL MARITIME LAW. The panel of speakers included Dr. Ann Fenech, President of the MMLA and member of the CMI Executive Council, Dr. Patrick Griggs, former President of CMI and Member of the Academic Committee at the IMO IMLI, Mr. Bent Nielsen, Chairman of the CMI International Working Group and International Subcommittee relating to the York-Antwerp Rules, Professor David J. Attard, Director of IMLI and Mr. Lino Vassallo, General Secretary of the Malta International Shipowners Association (MISA) and Permanent Representative of Malta to the IMO.
The event was held at the Malta Chamber of Commerce in Valletta and attracted over 80 delegates, amongst them the Hon. Dr. Silvio Camilleri, Chief Justice of Malta, Members of the Diplomatic and Consular Corps and distinguished personalities of the maritime legal community.

On 23rd March 2016 the MMLA in collaboration with the Yachting Services Business Section within the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry and Transport Malta invited to a workshop on ‘MLC COMPLIANCE FOR THE YACHTING SECTOR’.
Presentations were delivered by members of the MMLA Executive Committee Dr. Matthew Attard, Dr. Nicholas Valenzia, Dr. Anthony Galea and Mr. Mario Grech, Technical Compliance Superintendent of Transport Malta. Panellists in the second part of the event included Dr. Alison Vassallo, Chairperson of the Yachting Services Business Section within the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Ivan Sammut, Registrar-General of Shipping and Seamen of the Merchant Shipping Directorate within Transport Malta and Ing. Paul Cardona, Managing Director and Principal Surveyor of MISA and Dr. Anthony Galea who chaired the panel.

On Friday 30 October 2015 the Malta Maritime Law Association hosted a seminar entitled ‘Irregular Migration and its impact on International Shipping’ with the participation of Brigadier (Ret’d) Martin Xuereb, Director of the Migrant Offshore Aid Station (MOAS), Dr. Katrine Camilleri, Migration Law expert and Director of the Jesuit Refugee Service in Malta, and Dr. Felicity Attard, Resident Academic from the Department of International Law of the University of Malta.
