On 13 February the Malta Maritime Law Association organised an Academic Legal Meeting held principally for the legal maritime community at the Malta Chamber of Commerce in Valletta. The aim was to have an open discussion on recent case law and other developments.
Dr Jotham Scerri Diacono, Partner at Ganado Advocates and member of the MMLA Executive Committee, spoke about the interesting topic of what is included in a sale in the case of the Judicial Sale of a Ship. Dr Tonio Grech, Partner at Dingli & Dingli Lawfirm, presented the very interesting ramifications of the First Court and Court of Appeal Judgements in the REMA which focused on the ability or otherwise of a judgement debtor to exercise control over moneys deposited in Escrow. Dr Ann Fenech, Managing Partner of Fenech & Fenech Advocates and President of the MMLA gave an update on the proceedings at UNICTRAL on the International Convention on the effect of Judicial Sales. All presentations were followed by an interesting panel discussion with participation from the audience.
The event was very well attended by 35 delegates who accepted the invitation of the Association to this event. The MMLA organises two events per annum. One more technically oriented event and one legal academic meeting. Through these events, the MMLA attempts to keep members fully informed on the most important developments and trends and performs the function of a debating society and intermediary on maritime legal issues.
